Fatality rate estimates provided here were developed from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) fatality data released by NHTSA and vehicle miles traveled (VMT) data released by the FHWA Highway Statistics annual series. Please note that the State VMT data may fluctuate significantly. FMCSA recommends that States use the performance measure data in the report "State Level Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) Fatality Rate per 100 Million Total Vehicle Miles Traveled" in the Crash Statistics module to monitor their fatality rate.

3. Fatality Rate: equal to the "Number of Fatalities Involved in Commercial Motor Vehicle Fatal Crashes" divided by the "Adjusted CMV VMT" multiplied by 100. Fatality Rate figures represent Fatalities per 100 Million Vehicle-Miles Traveled.
